Coolangatta's point breaks have a well-deserved reputation for turning on mindlessly long barrells when conditions come together. But while many similarly epic setups have a stable base of coral reef or rock to sculpt the swell when it arrives, the Superbank needs another variable to fire up: sand, and lots of it.
It's been in short supply latey, and a lack of southerly swell has prevented stores at DBah and Froggies from moving around Point Danger into Snapper, where a hole has formed in the famous right-hand bank. With the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro waiting period beginning on the weekend, competitors and organisers have been discussing what might happen when the swell fills in over the next few days.
