NSW Weekend forecast

Easing SSE swell gradually fades across the NSW coast throughout Friday and the weekend. Friday sees the best of it with two foot plus surf still running across exposed coasts under lighter inshore WSW winds tending light ENE during the afternoon.

The high’s blocking influence reaches full affect as it moves slowly across the Tasman on Friday and Saturday; keeping a firm lid on some moderate storm activity affecting the Southern Ocean. This sees smaller leftover SSE swell hovering around one to two feet by Saturday morning. The upside is light Autumnal winds across the coast maintaining clean surface conditions all weekend. By Sunday expect smaller leftover background swells hovering around the one foot mark – ideally marking a low point in wave energy ahead of a minor increase in SE windswell early to mid next week.

Friday

SSE swell 2ft+ south facing and exposed open beaches, grading to 1 – 2ft elsewhere. WIND: Early WSW 5 to 10 knots tending E/NE 5 to 10 knots during the afternoon.

Saturday

S swell 1 – 2ft max south facing beaches, mixing in with background ESE swell at a similar size across open beaches. WIND: Early WNW 5 to 10 knots tending NNW to NNE 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon.

Sunday

SSE and ESE swell 0.5 - 1ft exposed coasts. WIND: Early W to SW 5 to 10 knots tending SE to NE 5 to 10 knots during the afternoon.

QLD Weekend forecast

Likewise an easing trend in SE swell continues across far northern NSW and south-eastern Queensland throughout Friday and the weekend.

Friday

SE swell 2 - 3ft exposed coasts, grading to 1 – 2ft elsewhere. WIND: Early inshore SSW 10 to 15 knots tending SE 10 to 20 knots.

Saturday

SE swell 2ft exposed coasts, grading smaller elsewhere. WIND: SW early tending ESE 10 to 15 knots during the day.

Sunday

ESE swell 1 - 2ft exposed beaches. WIND: SW to NW 5 to 15 knots early shifting SSE at 20 to 25 knots during the morning, increasing to 25 to 35 knots during the day.

VIC Weekend forecast

The suppressing ridge of high pressure continues to dominate our swell and wind climate through the end of the week. The large high moves slowly over Eastern Australia, stretching out into the Tasman on Saturday. As a result winds remain fairly light and favourable during this period, so a few more quality options may open up. On the other hand the high temporarily inhibits new wave generation, so expect SW swell dropping to very low levels state-wide during Friday and Saturday.

A more significant swell producing storm moves into our swell window beneath the mainland on Thursday. The low tracks slowly eastward, setting up a decent sized fetch of SW gales off the back of the system that should swing more WSW acting on the already existing sea state. Resulting SW groundswell is set to build throughout Sunday and hold peak size into Monday morning.

Friday

WSW swell (strong W component). Tiny on the Surf Coast, 1 to 3ft exposed open beaches. Light NNE to NW winds ahead of afternoon coastal seabreezes.

Saturday

WSW swell 1ft+ Surf Coast, 1 to 3ft exposed open beaches. Light N to NW winds ahead of afternoon coastal seabreezes.

Sunday

WSW swell 2 to 3ft Surf Coast early, 3 to 4ft+ open beaches early. Swell potentially pushing up a foot or so through the afternoon. NW winds 10 to 15 knots, ahead of lighter afternoon seabreezes.

WA Weekend forecast

No short shortage of swell on tap across the West Coast with a building trend in SSW swell underway over the weekend. The immediate outlook sees Thursday’s mid range SW pulse dropping back into 2-3ft+ range across South Coast open breaks by Friday. Early light SSE winds will see the best conditions ahead of a shift to the SSW during the afternoon.

A moderate, long period SSW groundswell picks up over the weekend as a broad fetch pushes into the Bight. For most breaks, the south angle of the swell would limit refraction, causing inconsistency between sets. Increasing set waves should begin to show during Saturday afternoon and peak into Sunday. Swell shadowing would likely cut down swell size as well so expect waves to be wrapping in around the 3-4ft range.

However, open breaks exposed to the S angle and focusing the longer period swell energy would pick up larger 4-6ft+ sets as the swell peaks into Sunday. Keep in mind the swell direction would differ from Thursday's more westerly and shorter period WSW pulse. Weather conditions could see light winds through the weekend so get amongst it as the swell builds.

Friday

WSW swell easing. Southwest coast: 3-4ft dropping 2-3ft. Perth: 0-1ft. WIND: SE to SW 5 -15 knots

Saturday

Old swell early, picking up S sets late. Southwest coast: 3ft rising 3 - 5ft south S facing breaks

Perth: flat. WIND: SE to SW 5 to 10 knots tending SSW 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon.

Sunday

SSW swell picks up. Southwest coast: 3-5ft, S facing breaks 4 – 6ft with sets

Perth: flat, occasional plus sets. WIND: Light ESE to ENE 5 to 10 knots tending to seabreeze in arvo.
