Rifles was on everyone’s lips for the early swell. Rumours of Shane Dorian and 22 Billabong surfers staying at Kandui kept the majority of boats out of the Playground area. Dorian did turn up with Pete Medina and various Billabong reps. Rifles turned it on for two or three epic days. Barrenjoey and Star Koat joined the Kandui/Wave Park/Kandui Villas crew for what many are calling the best Rifles in years. Selamat, my long term crew, stood-by in the Bynda Laut and snapped many of these photos. The others were taken by the lads from Kandui and Kandui Villas. “Best wave of my life” was heard not just over these few days but by many surfers throughout the month of April.
Meanwhile, down the southern end of the chain, the lefts were doing their stuff. Maccas, Greenbush and Mutts all on fire in their own hollowing, or should we say ‘hallowing’ way! I heard a snippet that Rags Rights produced the goods for a few French Pros and a couple of hardy Aussies.
That was the first swell without even mentioning the stuff that went on in between.
The second hit saw northerly winds stuff up a triple shot of Rifles. Maccas turned on and the village security had their work cut out trying to keep the two boat rule in force. We all want to surf by ourselves, but when the joint is going off, it is like a magnet. I hope we can sort out the political insurgency that is creeping into the Maccas line-up. Christian Barton, the most used surf guide in the chain, ended up with 20 stitches courtesy of the epic wave.
Meanwhile, the AKWA crew from Ulladulla were scoring big time aboard the Barrenjoey. Even surfed/towed a new spot now christened “Red-dogs”...
I also heard Kelly Slater was surfing epic low tide Sanur down in Bali and putting on a hell of a show.
At the end of the month, Barrenjoey was out for another trip scoring epic Telescopes. Two days earlier Lance Rights put on a performance just to show the chain that as far as surf spots goes, she is still hard to go past.
Swell is dropping for a day they say. We are into prime time so get up here!
