TRAVEL: CRAIKE, MARZO AND BANTING EXPLORE KING ISLAND

Location: King Island

Surfers: Ry Craike, Clay Marzo and Matty Banting

Clay and I were on our way back from Indo when I heard Quiky were wanting to trip there. I told clay it was super cold but there was some good waves there and the food was epic and he was sold.

This was my first trip to King Island but I have known about it for ages so I was stoked to go along. Mainly I had heard about the really good beach breaks and that the food was really good – big steaks and lots of cheese. There are plenty of set-ups there ranging from fun beach breaks to crazy slabs, I'm sure the locals have some hidden gems up there sleeve too. We were really hoping to score this beachie. I’d seen some photos of the place firing only a week before we got there and it looked insane and we had some nice conditions for it but the swell was just a little small. Like anywhere though, if you’re prepared to put in the effort there are plenty of waves everywhere.

Look at the colour, the lines, the spray. Ry Craike in the hole of a little winter gem.

Hawaiian Clay Marzo probably isn't too at home in cold small barrels, but gee he looks comfortable in this one.

Ya see the Australian Open this early this year? It was clinical airs on smaller waves like this that saw Matty Banting take home the trophies for the juniors and seniors in a top field event.

As I said before the food was incredible, huge steaks and amazing cheese, also the crayfish pies from the bakery were next level. The pubs were cool too and the overall vibe was great – really old buildings, super mellow laid back locals. They were really friendly towards us and helped us out heaps. There aren’t too many surfers down there but it seems like they’re pretty tight little hardcore crew.

We didn't score the best waves so I’d have to say the food and scenery was probably the highlight for us all.

You might have heard that the legendary local Wire Curtain passed away recently. I never got to meet Wire but from what I heard from the locals and other people he sounded like an absolute legend. I'm sure his spirit will live on for a long time down there.
