Alex Chacon is a former winner of the International Student Challenge and has since gone onto a promising professional surfing career

The third International Student SURF Challenge kicks off with a media conference at Southern Cross University’s Tweed Gold Coast campus (Brett Street, Tweed Heads) from 11am on Tuesday the 23rd of October.

Sponsored by GEOS Gold Coast TO CELEBRATE THE 10TH YEAR ANYVERSARY OF THE SCHOOL (an English language college based at Surfers Paradise), this gala international surfing event will be hitting the beaches of D-Bah, on the 15th- 16th of December.

Organisers expect over 80 competitors, representing 13 countries, who will battle it out in the three contest divisions. There will be an International Men’s Open, an International Women’s Open and an Australian Open category, surfers will compete for more than $10.000 in prizes from the sponsors.

The purpose of this event is to integrate international students with the Australian community and share the world’s cultures through surfing.

General Manager of GEOS Gold Coast, Natalie Johnston, said: “Gold Coast is the number one destination for many international students from all over the world who come here to study, travel and surf.

“The International Student SURF Challenge promises to be an exciting cultural event for competitors and spectators alike.”

Previous contest winner, 17 year old Brazilian Alex Chacon, will be among the guests at the media conference. After dominating the previous International Student SURF Challenge, Alex has moved on to success on the Australian Pro Junior Series.

The media conference will also be attended by Contest director Alex Teixeira (Emoceans), Manager Alain Ruthenberg (Australia Go), main sponsor’s CEO Natalie Johnston (GEOS) as well as other sponsors.

For the first time, International and local students are involved in helping with the promotional launch, as part of their studies at Southern Cross University (Diploma of Sport Management, Surfing Studies).
