Shoreline positioning monitoring - Surfers Paradise

During the latest swell event Coastalwatch has been archiving video from the high camera at Narrowneck. Video is archived when the predicted tide is close to mean sea level and again at the highest water level for the day.

The video is then post-processed and the shoreline is detected and plotted on the time-averaged video. The sequence of images captured at mean sea level can be useful for monitoring long term changes to the beach width.

These images show very little change in the shoreline position from the 18th to the 28th December. From the 29th the rise in swell, the storm surge and increased wave setup leads to a decreased beach width. When the swell has decreased again, an estimate of the total shoreline change can be made.

Long term automated data collection such as this may ultimately be used to determine the stability of a particular beach with respect to individual storm events.
