A few facts...
It is a well known fact that Sydney’s northern beaches generally hog the limelight in terms of surf media coverage. Outside of Torquay and the Gold Coast much of the surf industry is based north of the bridge. A fair few surf journalists also call the Northern beaches home.

In terms of wave quality and lifestyle, whenever non-Sydneysiders think of Sydney’s better surf options they think Whale, Avalon, Narrabeen, Dee Why, Manly etc.

Australian world champions (pre Occ and Mick) – TC, BL, Dooma, Nat and Midget are all names synonymous with Sydney’s northside.

The Eastside
Since the demise of ITN’s golden era in the late 80’s/early 90’s, the Bra boys have pretty much filled the “Eastside” surf media vacuum, and when Sydney’s big wave reefbreaks are featured in the surf media the focus is usually on the Cronulla region. Spots like “Ours”, Voodoo, Shark Island and Cronulla Point seem to saturate the coverage.

Everyone knows that the Eastern Suburbs is home to the hottest girls. However, in the last month or so the best photos of waves that have hit my inbox have also been coming out of Sydney’s east.

A few weeks back, Bronte had a sick right-hander, then there were the epic Anzac day lefts at Tama and more recently a spot I’ll just call “The Wedge” has been producing the goods.

From Saturday May 24 to Wednesday the 28th there were five days of light winds and consistent 3-4ft SE swell. The sandbanks on a lot of Sydney’s beaches were very straight, but in the smaller bays in Sydney’s east there have been some mighty fine little wedges on offer.

The photos don’t lie. – Ben Horvath.
