In recent weeks we have run a couple of random shots of “Snapper” on the home page in the coveted Line Up Of The Day slot. There has been little to celebrate wave wise in Qld in recent months, so it has been exciting watching the sand slowly filter back into position at Snapper ahead of the traditionally more consistent surf months in the new year.
Like a good friend that has been away for six months, “Snapper” showed up almost unannounced this week. Everyone was stoked to see him as it has been so long. He has changed a little, but he is still a good friend. There was no time to organise a big surprise party, but all the usual crew who have dearly missed “Snapper” showed up on cue to say g’day.
Just before I hand you over to JC, a guy who has enjoyed a life long relationship with “Snapper" i must point out that on the exact same days last year, an almost identical swell hit the region. The banks were different, but the swell and wind conditions were so similar it is uncanny. For reference and comparisons sake check out -

The Sand is Back.In late May 2009 (May 19-25 to be precise) a massive storm swell courtesy of an east coast low washed all the sand away from the point at Snapper through Little Marley and into Rainbow Bay, leaving nothing behind but bare rock post mayhem. There has been a huge hole at Snapper all winter and much of spring. It hasn’t looked like breaking for nearly 6 months until recently. In recent weeks there have been signs the sand was slowly beginning to form a little bank tight in on the point at Snapper. Since the weekend there have been some fun 2-4ft waves at Snapper. The sand is packed in tight on The Point and it has been shifting around the corner and into the small beach half way between Snapper and Rainbow rocks. It is like a flash back to the pre “Superbank” days, with surfers taking off behind the rock, getting slotted and then finishing up on the beach before the Rainbow rocks with a 50 – 60 metre ride.
A solid crew have been onto it. It has been packed with an all star cast, including world title contenders Mick and Joel feasting on their favourite wave before heading off to Hawaii.
Tuesday November 10 and Wednesday November 11 were the standout days.
