Standout Sessions: Shipsterns Tuesday - April 6, 2010.

Swell size and direction: - 8-12ft from the SSW at 16 seconds. Winds NNE.
State: - Tasmania.
Finally a swell that lived up to the hype. A bomb low way down south pushed a solid 21 foot swell straight at Tasmania in the 16 second range. All morning the swell would pulse then back right off. For a while on the out going tide everything went real quiet.
At one stage mid morning there were no sets at all for half hour periods and you could tell the crew were starting to get frustrated. However by around 11.00 am the bombs were back with hoots going down everywhere.
It seemed like half of Hobart were either on the rocks or out in the water, because there was talk of Kelly Slater making an appearance. He didn’t end up showing up, but big name guys like Koby Abberton, Mark Mathews, Richie Vaculik and Ryan Hipwood all rocked down for the monster swell.
Local boys Paradisis, the Holmers, Benny Richardson, Alex Zawadski and more all either walked or boated in. At one stage there were four runabouts and a 90 foot cray fishing boat floating in the channel watching the spectacle.
Mikey Brennan and Mark Mathews probably got the two best bombs of the day with James Hollmer X not far behind. The swell hung in most of the day and the winds blew offshore NE all day.
The line up was very busy with 5 skis whipping and probably 25 guys in the water at its peak. The swell was one of the cleanest anyone had seen in a year or so, and the sun came out at times making for some interesting moods.
Pretty much everyone got barrelled off their domes, but when you surf a wave like this the risks are always present. Mark Mathews had a couple of shocking wipe-outs. On one particular beating you could clearly see where he hit the bottom as his wetsuit had holes punched in it. James Hollmer got washed along the rocks the entire length of the point and was eventually found high and dry on the inside on the pebble beach where you get back onto land. The skis were extremely busy all day helping crew out.
Looking back it was extremely lucky that there were no serious injuries because everyone was charging very very hard.
