COASTALWATCH Bringing the surf to you
Spring Low

Spring in Queensland is regarded as our worst time of year for waves. It has been almost dead flat for weeks until an unseasonal low pressure system formed up off the far North Coast of NSW late on Sunday.

This created very strong SSE winds and on Monday the swell gradually rose all day to around 3-5 feet on dark.

On Tuesday morning at dawn it was a solid and straight at 4-6 feet and clean as a whistle with SSW winds on it. The open beaches were out of the question and the points were the only option with Burleigh and Currumbin Alley very sweepy and hard to maintain your position in the lineup.

From Snapper to Kirra was the pick and was packed with a school holiday crowd.  With the usual pack of touring pro surfers out of town the local boys reveled in the conditions, dominating the fun, unseasonable waves at Kirra. The strong sweep even saw a few slip through unridden.

It was a good surprise and made the first month of Spring a lot more pleasant than expected.
