(Sunday November 22 2009, Immediate Release) - The South Australia leg of the 2009 Rip Curl Grom Search Presented by SNICKERS has been run and won on the states South Coast.
The blustery conditions didn't hamper the sprits or surfing ability of the nations best under 16 year old grommets, with all of the seventy competitors showing enthusiasm right through out the competition, with many surfing across multiple age divisions.
Jordan Lawler had a cracker of a day taking out both the under 14 and the under 16 boys divisions.
In the 16's final Lawler, the grommet from Narrabeen in NSW put together a solid 14.33 combined wave total. Lawler defeated Soli Bailey of Suffolk Park, NSW with 12.70, Jack Scollard, NSW with 10.83 and Bodi Smith also of Narrabeen with 10.36.
"I am so stoked, I have never done this before" said Jordan.
"All of the boy were ripping so this is really cool, the grom search is one of the best comps going around".
Jordan took the under 14 boys down to the wire, just nudging past Kai Hing of the Sunshine Coast, QLD with 11.13, Jackson Baker with 11.06 and Soli Bailey on 7.43.
The under 16 girls final was a battle between three Victorians and one South Aussie. The girls competition all weekend was of a extremely high standard, with national bragging rights and a ticket to the Rip Curl Bells Beach Pro on offer too the winner.
India Payne from Phillip Island Victoria, scored 11.77 to take out the inform Kelly Laity on 6.03, South Australian State Champion Brinkley Davies on 4.97 and Matilda McLean of Victoria with 3.86.
"I feel great, it's really nice to come all of this way and do well" said India
"It is kind of similar to a few places back home so that helped".
Kelly Laity of Sandy Point in Victoria, dominated over the South Australian girls in the under 14 girls final winning with a combined wave total of 11.50. Laity took out Georgina Thomas in second with 7.43, Grace Gilbert and Megan Hein in third and forth respectively.
Kelly enjoyed the result in South Australia and found Middleton Point similar to her local break at Sandy Point in Victoria.
"It was pretty tricky conditions out there today, but it is like Sandy back at home and I have had a lot of practice in those conditions " Said Laity.
All winners of the 16's division get an invite to Bell's Beach, Victoria for the National Final. Following on from last year, the highest placed non event winner on the GromSearch Ratings will also get an invite.
Eventual ratings winners of the 14's divisions will get a two board quiver from one of Rip Curl's leading shapers, DHD.
The ever popular SNICKERS EXPRESSION SESSIONS will be run every day and encourages any participants to have a go, with prizes and awards for notable performances from all age groups. Rip Curl GromSearch Series is presented by Snickers, with valued support from Surfing Australia and media partners Waves Magazine and Fuel TV.
