- The 2009 South Australian Rip Curl Grom Search presented by Snickers has begun in fun 0.5 metre conditions at Waitpinga Beach near Victor Harbor.
Over seventy of Australia's best under 16 riders are surfing as apart of Australia's only dedicated surf tour for grommets.
Stand out surfer of the day, Jordan Lawler from Narrabeen in NSW, not only won his opening round heat but bagged the SNICKERS wave of the day.
Lawler threw together a combined wave total of 13.34 to take out Jackson Baker, (Merewether NSW) with 12.67 and local kid Sam Pike of Goolwa who placed third with 6.37.
Jordan landed a huge air reverse, which immediately drew the attention of the judging panel.
"It was really good out there with really fun waves and everyone in my heat surfed well so it was really competitive". Said Jordan
"This is identical to my home break, Alley Lefts, so I am heaps used to surfing conditions like this".
Mack Baddack, was the stand out South Australian surfer progressing through to the quarter finals, notching up a 9.30 combined wave total.
"I am from around here so hopefully that should come into hand" said Mack
"I am going to go out and give it all I have got and make sure that I have fun".
All winners of the 16's division get an invite to Bell's Beach, Victoria for the National Final. Following on from last year, the highest placed non event winner on the GromSearch Ratings will also get an invite.
Eventual ratings winners of the 14's divisions will get a two board quiver from one of Rip Curl's leading shapers, DHD.
The ever popular SNICKERS EXPRESSION SESSIONS will be run every day and encourages any participants to have a go, with prizes and awards for notable performances from all age groups.
