(Ocean Grove, VIC – Saturday, 21 November 2009): The first ever Wahu Surfer Groms event landed at Ocean Grove today with over 40 young surfers taking to the water.
With a tiny swell, and light onshore winds which swung offshore during the day, groms from all over the state got involved in the surfing as well as heaps of beach games thanks to Wahu.
Nearby local Billy Harrison (9, Barwon Heads), was the standout surfer of the event, winning every heat he was in and taking out both the Under 13 and Under 11 boys divisions.
Harrison took out the Under 13 final in the rapidly dropping swell by besting his older brother Tom Harrison (11, Barwon Heads) who scored 7.33 (out of a possible 20), with a total heat score of 8.84 (out of a possible 20). Cody Robinson (Jan Juc), Ben Considine (Barwon Heads) and Will Dickson (Barwon Heads) finished in third, fourth and fifth respectively.
In his Under 11 final, Harrison dominated scoring a heat total of 10.00 to out score Joshua Cammarere (Torquay), Fergus Willett (Barwon Heads) and Lauchie Brearley (Armidale) who placed second, third and fourth respectively.
The Under 15 boys division was won by Tristan Forass (Jan Juc) who out surfed Luke Dunlop (Phillip Island), Francis Meade (Phillip Island) and Tom Harrison (Barwon Heads) to take the title.
In the girls divisions, the Under 15s was won on a countback by Lucy Walsh (Pt. Lonsdale) who bested Zoe Clarke (Jan Juc).
Highest wave score and heat total of the day went to Xavier Huxtable (Jan Juc) with a 7.67 (out of a possible 10) wave score, and 13.34 (out of a possible 20) heat total in his round 1 heat.
