Bells Begins, Kelly Fools and Dion Floats The Wedge – This Week In Surfing
Eight Things From Surfing and The Internet On The Week That Was April 4, 2015
By Vaughan Blakey, Danny Johnson & Mike Jennings
2015 has been flying along at rapid pace and so very, very much has happened. There was a state election in NSW that somebody won, Gabriel Medina shaved his body and my mum got a new job as a dog walker. Keeping up with all these sorts of goings on can be overwhelming but at least we’ve all got a four day weekend to take pause and reflect upon the crucifixion and resurrection of the Easter Bunny and read the best damn round up of everything that’s happened this week in surfing.
1. Bells Started, The Surf Ain't The Best and That's Okay
Are you a bit bummed about the quality of surf the WSL has experienced so far this year? Don’t be! Yeah the waves kinda sucked at Snapper but how good were the meltdowns! Gabe and Micro’s verbal slam down, Josh Kerr’s post heat skitzout, Freddy’s Rock! It was magic. With the swell forecast for Bells indicating conditions and waves akin to a dog’s breakfast there’re sure to be plenty more tense but hilarious mind snaps to keep us all thoroughly entertained. Meanwhile Rounds 1 and 2 have been completed and feature as a highlight the global arrival of everybody’s new favourite surfer Mason Ho.
2. The Farm
Do you like good surfing and Morning of The Earth farm vibes? Well get with the times man, it's 2015 and babies use iPads now. Or... actually, yeah, watch this clip. It's from RVCA and shows the epic farm Ellis Ericson and pals live on. Plus, they get some sick as North Coast tubes.
3. Dion Agius Surfing Newport Wedge Is The Best
"The dirty old Wedge", ahhh sigh, remember the Wedge section in Endless Summer? Bruce Brown is the man. Imagine he narrated your life. That would make your life at least 75% funnier and happier. Anyway, the dirty old Newport Wedge in California put on a show recently, and Tasmanian surfer Dion Agius was out there doing floaters and stuff. It is an enjoyable viewing.
4. Kelly Slater Pities The Fools
On that one special morning of the year where it’s completely fine to lie about about whatever you want, and make complete suckers out of everyone, Kelly wrote a novel length note on Instagram telling the world that he’s done. Much like the moment Noa Deane announced that he never intends on ever joining the tour, people went bananas.
5. Mitch Coleborn Doesn't Dream of Perfect Blue
What do you dream of? Is it perfect waves? Or baby kittens? Is it baby kittens surfing perfect waves? That's awesome. Mitch Coleborn here dreams of dirty stinking chunky imperfection. And he rips.
6. Road Tapes
The Kustom team share with us a road trip video featuring there very rad-strong team of surfboard riders and shoe wearers in Jay Davies, Beau Foster, Ricardo Christie and more.
7. This Bells Fly Over Is Kinda Magic
"After the previous event on the Gold Coast where everything moves in hyper-real time and where planned obsolescence rules and everything is bust and boom and seems built to be replaced – apartment blocks, pointbreaks, surf stars – there’s a soothing permanence about being at Bells Beach. Things move slowly here… the waves, the wisdom, even the wildlife. The kangaroos on Bob Johnson’s farm appear to have been stuffed and staged for the tourist cameras, the mob motionless in the midday sun until one of them eventually hops lazily to a fresh patch of green." That's from Sean Doherty's report from Day 1 here at the Rip Curl Pro. And it certainly sums up the place real nice. So does this drone video.
8. Nix Nic Nooley Premiered
Toby Cregan and Creed McTaggart’s new sci fi surf film masterpiece had its first public outing at the Torquay Pub and was universally praised by all who crammed in to see it. “A triumph, an experience that stays with you long after the credits have rolled, five stars,” said a couple of Margaret and David lookalikes after the screening who actually turned out to be Ellis Ericson and Duncan McNicol, two of the film's stars.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a long weekend everyone. CW out.
