BEST LINE-UP EVER SERIES | New Zealand

Photographer: Richard Hodder

Somewhere on the vast, rugged coastline that makes up the Aotearoa, this mind-blowing line-up exists. We can't tell you exactly where nor what time of year it fires but that's the beauty of the search.

When the search takes you across the ditch to New Zealand there are so many long winding roads that wrap and wind around headlands leading to private spots like this one.

Richard Hodder is based in Auckland and is driven by people who make deliberate decisions to live a life less ordinary, who are willing to take risks to follow their dreams and are willing to power through the mental blocks to do the things they love.

His advice on finding the best surf spots out skirting this homeland don't have carparks. He says, what is most special about the crisp, photogenic landscapes is the rolling headlands and the variety of waves so close in proximity to each other. Can't argue with that right?

The best time of year to go? Well "it depends on what you want from a surf trip." replies Hodds. "It's not often you can surf in boardshorts for hours on end." So anyone south of Perth and the NSW south coast will be right at home. "You'll probably get less crowded, better waves on the fringes of winter, but realistically it will come down to your preference", so do some research. Like everywhere, there are spots that are more consistent in different seasons based on swells, currents and wind.

Got you frothing?

GET THERE:
Air New Zealand depart the east coast multiple times a day and a one-way fare direct to Aukland can cost you as little as $266 right now and from the west coast you're looking at a $500 start.

STAY HERE & GET AROUND:
Once you land, pick yourself up a motorhome or campervan from Maui for the trip. It will give you a VIP pass to the off-the-beaten-track secret spots. You won't regret it and you'll have the freedom to explore and roam.

STAY WARM & FLEXIBLE:
You'll need a wettie for autumn, winter and spring on the North Island and all year on the South Island. We recommend the Rip Curl Flash Bomb 4/3 Zip Free or the 3/2 for something a bit lighter. You should also pack booties, gloves and a hood if you feel the cold.

THE FOODS:
The foods you should pick up but you won't know their names; Kaitaia Fire, Scroggin, Anything cooked via Hangi and Afgan Biscuits.
