COASTALWATCH | REVIEW

As part of the 2016 Summer Wetsuit Guide, I tested out the new season Rip Curl Madison 1mm Boyleg, long sleeve springsuit. Women's surfing has progressed in leaps and bounds with surf apparel, as a result of the demands of the exceedingly high-performing female athletes who now dominate the world tour.

This season Rip Curl has altered the now popular long sleeve spring suit design and added in some amazing new features. I must admit I was skeptical about a couple of these features before actually taking the suit out for a surf but was surprised with how well they stood up under pressure. Overall it was great to see a couple of risks in design working out for the better in performance and looks.

CAN'T BEAT IT BECAUSE:

  • The neoprene is the softest out of any other suit on the market
  • No velcro to catch on and ruin the wetsuit. No more getting your hair stuck in the velcro or ruining the neoprene when taking on and off. (This is one of the biggest new features!)
  • Zipper is strong and holds at the top - this is one of the features I was skeptical about, but only once did the zipper run down during the surf.
  • Noticeable flexibility throughout whole suit; arms, chest, back and bum
  • No seams under the arms, really comfortable and high flex
  • Great, real-size fit. (I am a 10 and wore a 10 in this and it was perfect fit)
  • Flattering seam placement, for girls/women as well as great colours and floral pattern
  • Neckline is super comfortable
  • Suitably warm in 19-20 degrees water cool enough up to 23 degrees water.
  • After 2 months use, worn almost every day there is no sign of colour fade, glue erosion, unstitching, not even any was rubbing off onto the wetsuit.

WHAT COULD BE BETTER:

  • Zipper cord isn’t long enough to get grab comfortably.
  • Stretch panels that run along ribs maybe need to be thicker to soften that high-pressure area during paddle, especially if you get rib bumps. (This is conflicting for me, because this panel make the suit so flexible but is maybe just a tiny bit out of place.)
  • Leg length is a bit in-between styles, needs to be a little higher cut to maybe the bikini to sit comfortably.

Sizes Available: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14

Colours Available: Black, Blue, Coral (pictured), Black & White vortex
