Get Ready For Portugal To Blow Your Mind
Positioned perfectly for super Atlantic storm swells and pristine beach breaks, Portugal is one must-do surf travel destination in your lifetime. But with it's beautiful beaches and dream waves we haven't seen much from the Portuguese surfers on the World Tour. It's all about to change.
Portuguese surfer Vasco Ribeiro will attack the 2017 World Surf League Qualifying Series with a big new name on his team. Tiago Pires, the first ever Portuguese competitor in the World Men's Championship Tour is Vasco’s new mentor and career agent. With Ribeiro's Main Sponsor, Portuguese brand DEEPLY, still giving major support. This is heavy duty "Made in Portugal" backing for the former Pro Junior World Champion, European Pro Junior Champion, and, as of 2014 three times Portuguese National Champion Vasco Ribeiro. His biggest goal for the year is to qualify for the 2018 Samsung Galaxy Championship World Tour.
“This idea came to life after an invitation by Vasco at the end of 2016. After thinking about my future career and longstanding wish to be a sports agent, I’ve decided to embrace this project and accept Vasco’s offer. I won’t be a coach – that will be José Seabra – but a mentor and career agent. I want to be the main foundation behind the athlete to give him support in whatever he needs. The idea is to make Vasco a complete and consistent athlete. We will work on several aspects of performance such as physical, technical, mental and nutritional values to make him a well prepared and overall better athlete, with a career length above average. For me,this is a huge step, maybe the second greatest challenge of my professional life after my qualification. After stopping in 2016 to create my documentary, I came to a point in life where I felt in great need of a fresh challenge. This seems to be a really good one. For me, Vasco is possibly Portugal's biggest surfing talent having witnessed him grow in terms of surfing, and his potential to accomplish great things is huge,” Tiago Pires stated.
For his part, Vasco Ribeiro is thrilled for embracing this project alongside Tiago Pires. “I’m very happy to have started this project. To have “Saca” as a mentor and career agent, José Seabra as a coach, and to be working with everyone engaged in this. It has been great so far and has everything to be even better especially with all Tiago’s experience helping me. I will work really hard to conquer my goals, the main one being qualifying for the Championship Tour.”
For DEEPLY’s Head of Marketing Ricardo Aragão, this team has all the potential to win. “Since we signed in up we strongly believe in Vasco’s successes. 2016 was clearly a year under his potential and it was also obvious that the strategy had to be different for the new year. Saca’s presence in Vasco’s future strategy brings a higher degree of motivation, an extra level of commitment and demand. The goals are still the same and now we feel that we have better conditions to achieve them. When Vasco joined DEEPLY, the fact that it was a Portuguese brand with international ambitions complimented his own ambitions. Once again with strong support from a Portuguese team that will work tirelessly towards Vasco's success.”
Vasco Ribeiro travels to Australia on February 15th, where he will compete at the Maitland & Port Stephens Toyota Pro and the Australian Open of Surfing, both worth 6.000 event points on the World Surf League Qualifying Series.
