It has been confirmed that a 17-year-old girl from Mandurah, Western Australia has passed away after suffering a serious injury from a shark attack in Esperance on Monday.

The girl and her father were surfing at the popular 4WD and camping spot 'Kelpies' near Wylie Bay where she was attacked. It was reported that the teenager lost her left leg before being pulled from the water. She received CPR before being transferred to Esperance Hospital. It is alleged that complications from the attack, including blood loss resulted in the fatality this afternoon.

This is the first shark attack fatality for the state in 2017 after two deaths in 2016 and a number of non-fatal attacks.

The Western Australian government works closely with local authorities, Surf Life Saving to update and educate the public about shark activity through their SharkSmart site
