A fresh swell built rapidly on Friday afternoon May 1. On Saturday morning May 2 there were 5ft sets on all of the Surfcoast reefs. It was sunny; the wind was perfect offshore NW making for smooth, picture perfect water surface conditions. The only thing wrong with it was the amount of people in the water! Crowd count at Winki was in the sixties for most of the morning, it looked more like the super bank. There were similar crowds at every other break in the area too.

The Bells/Winki car park has pretty much been blocked off for the past two months, and it seems as soon as the barriers disappeared they were replaced by more cars and busses. To add to that Surfing Victoria was running a Westcoast Juniors round at Jan Juc. The combo made for some aggressive people in the line-up.

By mid morning the wind swung light onshore and the tide started pushing in. This was the time to surf, wave faces were still clean, with the incoming tide it was more consistent and the crowds seemed to disappear. Bells and Winki were the pick. There were also some really fun high tide waves around late in the afternoon, the wind stayed very light and the crowds continued to deflate.

On Sunday morning conditions were similar, although the swell had dropped to around 3-4ft and it was way more inconsistent. It was crowded at times. the wind swung more west in the arvo and the swell continued to drop.

The water was still warm at 16.5 degrees, and the days were perfectly sunny.
