COASTALWATCH | FLIGHT CENTRE BURLEIGH PRO

Conditions on the Gold Coast have been pretty so-so for months now and unfortunately now swell came to the party for the opening rounds of the 2017 Flight Centre Burleigh Pro. BUT, the 1-2 foot waves appeared no obstacle for the likes of some of the best Qualifying Series surfers in the country.

The newest women’s World Junior Champion Macy Callaghan took to the water in round two as the event reigning champion and with three incredible wins under her belt from as many weeks. Callaghan barely missed a beat in Heat 5, posting her winning heat total of 11.25 early and utilising priority to control the heat in its entirety.

“I’ve been surfing a lot of heats recently so am feeling good,” Callaghan said. “It isn’t the sort of Burleigh we would all love to have for this contest but it is still fun. I was just enjoying myself out there which always helps in heats I think. If you are having fun things will tend to go your way.”

Local, Mitch Parkinson relished managed only a midrange heat total of 9.85 but was able to progress into Round 3.

“It was a long wait for the good ones but when they came they were pretty fun,” Parkinson said. “It would be amazing if there more waves on offer but it ‘s just good to be surfing a comp at Burleigh. I missed the entry for last years comp so I’m stoked to be in it this year.”

Competition continues over the weekend with the forecast looking like continued small-scale E conditions persisting in the 1 to 2ft max range ahead of a minor rise in ENE tradewind swell into the 2 to 3ft max range early to mid next week.
