It's been a tough week with a lack of waves for one of the most popular World Surf League Qualifying Series events. The Flight Centre Burleigh Pro wrapped up today with slightly better conditions in the 2-3 foot range for the finalists.

In the women's division, Central Coast front-runner Macy Callaghan cruised right through until the finals where she met World Junior Champ predecessor Isabella Nichols. Nichols whip around in the small surf held Callaghan at bay, but only just with the two going point for point in the excellent scoring range with nines all round. Although close, Callaghan couldn't catch Nichols at the final buzzer.

“That was such a fun final against Macy,” Nichols said. “We were both having a lot of fun out there. We both wanted to win but not being too competitive which was nice. I was under a lot of pressure at the end and gave her a wave and was kicking myself because I know how amazing Macy is and how easily she could get a score. I’m just stoked to have had a final with one of the best female surfers in the World at the moment.”

Indonesia's prodigal competition surfer Oney Anwar, who now appreciates the Gold Coast as his second home put on an incredible performance for the crowd on the hill with Kalani Ball in the men's final. Despite Ball having an early lead it was Anwar's powerful air-game that were rewarded with excellent scores and his second QS win in two months.

“Until (my win in) Taiwan last year I had a run of really bad results and was struggling to find motivation. After Taiwan, I was really fired up and now to open the season with a win is the best. My goal is to be the first Indonesian to Qualify for the Championship Tour (CT) and this win is a great result to start my campaign off.”

The next Australian WQS event is the Telstra Stores Tweed Coast Pro at Cabarita on 1 February.

The Flight Centre Burleigh Pro was a WQS 1000 event held between 26-29 January at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast. Coastalwatch was proud to support the event as official surf forecaster in partnership with Surfing Queensland.
