COASTALWATCH | BALI, INDO SURF FORECAST

Forecast Issued by Dan Wyer on Tuesday, 18 April 2017

Mid to late April looks set to deliver a continued run of clean, quality surf throughout the Indonesian archipelago. From the hardened swell chasers to the regular punter who has timed a lucky run with some time off work – the week ahead is looking prime. While nothing huge we do expect to see plenty of mid to large SSW to SW groundswell throughout the period.

OVERVIEW

Looking ahead in detail. Plenty of good to excellent days of clean, mid to large sized surf throughout the current forecast period. Starting with Wednesday we see a continued run of clean fun sized surf throughout the Islands. Exposed reefs, beaches will be the pick of the spots with wave heights within the 3-4ft range.

Thursday we continue to see promise for a pulse in large SSW groundswell, filling in throughout the day. Stemming from a deep polar low currently tracking south east of Western Australia. Early intensity over the past 24-48hrs within our SSW swell window has generated strong energy in extra long period SSW groundswell. Currently this swell has made landfall across W.A’s Southwest coast with solid 10-12ft sets across deep water reefs in the Margaret River region. Dispersed energy is expected to track north before arriving across the Indonesian Archipelago into Thursday. Early forerunners within the 18-20seconds range may show some inconsistency prior to bulk energy filling in throughout the day. Expect clean, near glassy 4-6ft+ surf across exposed reefs, rising with potential 8ft sets into the day.

Trailing energy in SSW groundswell is then expected to hold some size into Friday morning with an underlying overlap in mid sized SSW groundswell retaining wave energy into the day. We should see some decent 4-6ft surf across exposed breaks with potential larger sets early. Current wind models show potential for moderate ESE – SE trade winds to kick in over the weekend. Clean quality surf continues with mid sized SSW groundswell expected to hold into Saturday morning prior to easing off slowly into the afternoon.

This brief ease in swell will be short lived with current guidance indicating an overlapping pulse in SSW groundswell showing rising sets into Sunday. This fresh pulse come courtesy of a large complex series of polar lows intensifying ENE of Heard Island Wednesday, Thursday. Strong energy in SSW groundswell generated by this system is then expected track north before making land fall across the Indonesian archipelago throughout Sunday 30th, Monday 01st of May.

LONG RANGE

Looking further ahead…From Tuesday 02nd May We expect to see an easing trend take place with current long range models showing nothing of great significance through until potentially Saturday 06th May. We may see a mid sized pulse prior to this on Thursday 04th. . There is scope for exposed breaks to hold clean fun sized surf on Tuesday 02nd within the 3-4ft+ range, easing 2-4ft Wednesday 03rd and into Thursday morning prior to building wave heights through the later half of next week. Stay tuned, Indo forecast’s posted Tuesday’s.
