BEST OF THE WEB

Squall after squall after squall of falling rains is being blown over Jan Juc right now. Sheets of water lay heavy over the greens and browns of the Victorian landscape behind the famous surfing reserve.

The comp (The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach) is off for the afternoon.

But after, let's face it, a mongrel of a morning, Round 4 for the women and Round 5 for the men were completed and we have our quarter-finalists, the final 16 surfers that will eventually be narrowed down to two 2015 Bell ringers.

The quarters will likely be run tomorrow morning before the contest site is blown away again, while the rest of event is set to finish on Thursday... definitely-maybe.

Whose left and the quarter-final match-ups are listed at the bottom of the page, but how about those showdown heats of Adriano v Gabriel, Mick v Jordy (oh my oh my oh my) and Steph v Tyler? Gangbusters.

To tide you over till morning, here are the best five vids we've seen come out of Bells so far this year.

Courtney And The Rock

In the last wave of her Round 3 heat with Coco Ho and Tyler Wright, Conlogue is searching for a score and shows no regard for her own safety in trying to get it. The close-out section comes, she commits, and almost ends up cracking her head on some Bells reef. This could have been so heavy. For her efforts, the WSL judges did not give her the score she needed to win the heat... thanks WSL judges.

Who On The World Tour Is Out First For The Dawn Session?

Hint: It's Carissa Moore! Sorry, did I give it away? I did. I really did. Ah well. Cold morning dawn patrols are the kind of joy/pain combo that only surfers know, and nowhere better is that feeling reflected than the vibes of the Winkipop carpark as the sun rises over the line-up at Bells. Sippin' coffees under beanies and checking whose out first. The best. Love Mick's reflection on how dawn patrols have changed in his ten-plus years on tour, the fact that John John puts on his wettie before leaving the house, and Lakey Peterson getting into Hells Bells as it plays over the beginning of the first heat. Vibes are strong.

All Hail Filipe Foledo

The Brazillian journalist from the Brazillian surfing magazine Waves told us that his name is pronounced "Tuh-Lay-dough" and not "Tuh-Lee-dough". This is probably worth getting right because it's looking like the youngest and lightest surfer on tour will be keeping the gold jersey for some time. It'll probably be packed in his board bag when the Australian leg finishes in a month. The kid is on fire, and at an event no-one expected him to light up.

Kelly Slater Analyses One Wave

This is so rad. Kelly Slater, GOAT, runs us through a single wave from a heat at the Rip Curl Pro – what he's thinking, how and where he generates speed, where and how it goes wrong and right. He's like a Rain Man for waves, his understanding for detail is so precise. Imagine a Youtube series where Kelly analysed some of the best ridden waves in history. Kelly breaking down TC at Pipe. Kelly breaking down John John at Teahupoo. Kelly breaking down Tony Abbott at Freshwater... make it happen WSL!

Steph's Cutbacks At Beautiful Bells Are...

Well, beautiful. Honestly, for a fifth clip here we could have put any number of things. Carissa Moore has done a turn that could rip your face off. Silvana Lima got a 10 for a turn so committed it pretty much asked the lip to marry it (weird analogy...) and there's been full rail classic Bells surfing from Kelly, Taj, Mick and Adriano that all scored high 9s. But there's something graceful and balanced and just so nice about watching Steph on a classic Bells wall. So here it is. That second turn that brings her back into the pocket is all-time.

And those are the best clips so far from the Rip Curl Pro Bells 2015. Set your alarm for the quarter-finals tomorrow.
