A 38 year old man has been attacked by a shark at Lighthouse Beach in Port Macquarie this evening.

The man, who was bodyboarding, allegedly saw the shark before it took a bite at his upper leg. He has allegedly sustained life threatening injuries including back and stomach trauma and was taken to Port Macquarie Hospital awaiting surgery after he was administered first aid on the beach by local surfers and members of the public.

Mid-North Coast bodyboard icon Aaron Dodds, is the Forster Tuncurry Bodyboard Association President, Jeff Wilcox Memorial Event Director and Boogie Youth Development Series Director and has said "We the public are aware of the risks, however a few points need to be considered; An ever growing coastal population, an increase in commercial fishing, reducing the food supply for shark and finally, Shark culling has stopped. I am not calling for the culling in anyway, I am asking the media to stop fear mongering and driving fear and terror down our throats."

This attack is the 5th on the East Coast of Australia this year.

Dodds says "I feel for the port Macquarie community, losing of a great man last year and now a new attack. Prayers and thoughts are with the Family.

Surf Life Saving NSW released a statement saying "In consultation with Port Macquarie Hastings Council and Police, Surf Life Saving has closed all beaches in the region for a 24 hour period. Signs have been erected and people are being urged to stay out of the water until further notice."
