A local resident of Black Head on the NSW Mid North Coast has been attacked by a shark today after being knocked off his surf ski just 50-metres from shore.

The victim, David Quinlivan, 62 is a member of the Black Head Surf Club and suffered injuries including lacerations to his lower left leg after he was knocked into the water from his ski. He was able to paddle back to the beach where he was assisted by beach-goers. Mr. Quinlivan was treated on the beach and has been transferred to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Warren Thompson, a local resident, saw the drama unfold from the beach.

“It would have been around 11.30 or so and I was down there checking out the surf conditions when I saw the paddler fall off the side of his ski,” Mr Thompson said.

“Something clearly had knocked him off the ski and he was hanging on to the edge. There were a couple of us on the beach and we all just sprinted to the water to see what we could do to help.

“He had lost his paddle but was able to climb back onto the ski and caught a wave to the shore. It looked to us like he was having heart attack. When we reached him he told us to stay out of the water.”

This attack is the 6th on the East Coast of Australia this year.

When questioned about the latest shark attack today, NSW Premier Mike Baird said, "These attacks are unprecedented, they're extraordinary. They are going to require action."

Surf Life Saving NSW have released a statement saying "Signs informing residents of the closure of Black Head beach have been erected and will remain in place for at least the next 24 hours."
