The Pe'ahi Challenge was called on overnight as part of the World Surf League's Big Wave Tour. Pe'ahi, also known as Jaws was boosting up 40-50 foot waves for the invitees who were paddling into the giant waves rolling into Maui.

“It’s what we were hoping for with the rise in bouys yesterday afternoon and everyone is excited for what’s in store." Said Peter Mel, WSL Commentator & big wave surfer. "It will ease up throughout the day, even as the morning progresses, but still provide us plenty of incredible waves to crown a champion this afternoon.”

There was plenty of guts amongst the competitors as set after set built up and the guys kept on taking the drop into some pretty gnarly faces. Former big wave surfer, Greg Long made jaws hang open when he took on this massive and scored a 9 from the judges.

Billy Kemper took out a historical day of paddle surfing in a 6-man final. Kemper drove down the line opening his account with an 8-point barrel ride, (according to the Big Wave scoring format your highest score is doubled and combined with your next highest score to make your total) and secured his top score of 22.77 after a second solid drop.
