The Gold Coast has been making moves on the protection of it's internationally recognised surf breaks and beaches, and in it's latest innovative move has announced the inaugural International Surfing Symposium. The event to be held in association with the World Surfing Reserves council on the Gold Coast will host a two-day conference on Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 March from 9am-4pm at Currumbin RSL on the eve of the first WSL event on the year.

The symposium has full support of the State and Local Governments, universities and private sector and will feature Gold Coast World Champions, Peter Townend and Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew amongst a stellar list of keynote speakers including California's Brad Gerlach, Rasta, Tim Baker, Mark Price, Lindsay Lyon, Dr. Neil Lazarow, Nick Mucha and Dick Van Straalen.

It's an amazing opportunity for the surf community to come together as echoed by Rabbit, “It's a fantastic initiative by Gold Coast World Surf Reserve, the inaugural International Surfing Symposium will not only gather the sport, lifestyle and culture of surfing luminaries, but bring to the Gold Coast many of the world’s experts in coastal conservation and surf sustainability. We face many challenges over the next 20 years and this Symposium will have a collective brains trust second to none."

The Symposium will provide night time entertainment; on Wednesday 15 March, Save the Waves will present their International Surfing Film Festival at Surfworld Surf Museum at Currumbin including a documentary on how Gold Coast was endorsed as the 8th WSR and the Dedication Ceremony, amongst a diverse range of short 15 minute docos over a 4 hour period with music breaks. There is also $5,000 worth of prizes to be won including a Virgin Atlantic flights for 2 to Bali, a brand new Firewire surfboard, a Patagonia Yulex wetsuit and a Shark Shield.

The event is open to the public. For further information visit the Gold Coast Surfing Reserve website
