After the completion of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach pro Surfer Sally Fitzgibbons, World Junior Champion Macy Callaghan, pro photographer Fran Miller, Professional Longboarder Belinda Baggs and Ripcurl GM Digital Brooke Farris sat down to discuss the incredible changes and progressions with women's surfing, where it’s going and the beautiful imagery that’s been its lifeblood along the way.

Episode 4, How Social Media Changes Everything: Creating Content

Social media is such a huge and integrated part of everybody's life these days, and even more so for athletes with sponsorship who are representing brands and companies.

In this episode, the women confront what exists on social media, what the sponsor's expectations are and how people deal with what they see.

Brooke Farris emphasises that it's more about the athlete and their performance at Rip Curl.

“We sponsor athletes on how they perform, the person they are, and as long as their social channels are a reflection of them as a person then it’s always going to feel natural and connected to the sponsor.”

Sally Fitzgibbon's has nearly 400 thousand Instagram followers and posts images multiple times a day. As one of the countries top inspirational athletes she comments on the pressure to feed the content beast that is social media beast.

“It’s so emotive and powerful to create one image,” she says, “but it’s hard to continually replicate it and keep up with the speed and demand. Sometimes it’s gone in three seconds, even though it takes days to create.”

Macy Callaghan is one, if not the best junior surfer in Australia, she too feels the pressures on her way up the ladder in the industry, reflective of what Brook said earlier.

“I feel like I sometimes struggle to keep posting things that my sponsors want to see,” adds Macy. “I’m a surfer, I just want to go surfing, I just want to be myself… I still love Instagram so it works both ways.”
