SUMATRA CHARTERS | ENTER THE MATE SHIP

What’s it like having a professional photographer shoot your surf sessions? Find out from the dude who will join the Mate Ship winner and their crew.

Mike Egan is the photographer joining the winner of the Mate Ship and his/her crew. Last week, the Sumatra Charters boat (Switchfoot) went on its maiden voyage – and Mike forced himself to be on board to test run the conditions. Way to take one for the team, pal.

CW: Just how epic is the boat?

ME: Everything is brand new on it. Really comfortable, modern. Got all the mod-cons: air-conditioning, TV, two bathrooms, it’s just super comfortable. The crew and the captains are just so onto it as far as where the swells are, where to go, where to hit and when. One of the biggest problems over here [in Indo] is that there are so many boats, so having that knowledge and the ability to get away, get to those spots where no one is, [is] a huge draw card for the guests. It’s sick!

CW: Do you have any hot tips for people being shot by a pro surf photographer for the first time?

ME: Essentially just keep the communication going. Be aware that photographers will use different lenses, so they will have different distances they can shoot at. Generally in the water I’ll shoot with a 50mm, which usually gives me about a 10-15m range. Talk to the photographer before you go out, ask what they are shooting with and how far away they should be - that’s the main thing to keep in mind. The boat has got two little tenders, so being able to shoot from the side of the wave is a big thing. We don’t really get the option to do that in Australia very much - to shoot into the wave (unless you’re on a [jet] ski of course). It’s been quite fun for me to have this opportunity. Especially when you’ve got a group of guests that are spread out - you can get most of their waves.

CW: What kind of output should someone expect?

ME: The light’s amazing over here! Every afternoon, the conditions are almost perfect for shooting. Whoever does win the trip should be in for a bit of a treat as far as getting some nice-looking shots, light wise, let along wave wise as well!

CW: Best wave you visited on the charter?

ME: I can’t tell you the name, Jason (the captain) said he’d kill me if I told you. He took us to this place and said, “If you tell anyone where this is, you’re not coming on another trip.” Fair enough. All the other spots are pretty well known; there’s Macaronis and Thunders, Scarecrows, probably 20 [known spots] basically. The best waves we got were at a place that didn’t even have a name, one that no-one knew about, we just rocked up to. It was awesome. There was a left and right just peeling around this point, the goofy and naturals both had their own little wonderland going on.

CW: OK, we’re officially pumped. Any other little bonuses you’d like to share?

ME: The charter caters for all different surfing levels and abilities. Not everyone’s a full charger - there might be some that like the 3-4ft stuff, or you know, we’ve had a couple of trips where there have been beginners as well, so we try to cater for everyone. There are spots where there is the outside break, which is the main break and that will be semi-solid, but then there’s also the little inside wave or something, so we can jump on one of the tenders and [that crew] can go and have fun too.

CW: How would you sum up the trip in three words?

ME: Fun, waves, Bintangs.
