COASTALWATCH | SWELL DIARY

Sydney Swell Diary: 24 - 25 October 2016

When Chief Surf Forecaster Ben Macartney notified us that there'd be a drought-breaking swell in a swell alert last week, we have to admit that we were skeptical that it would come to fruition. But low in behold, the south swell came marching up the coast over the weekend as predicted and despite being very straight in many places, others very rideable.

Macartney said about the swell in his forecast analysis;

This episode followed the evolution of a deep low-pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea over the weekend; initially coalescing east of Bass Strait on Saturday morning before meandering southeast during the day.

Powerful SSE groundswell peaked late Monday and maintained solid surf ranging from 4 to 6ft plus across the region on Tuesday morning under light WNW winds. An overnight drop in size is predicted to see more accessible surf in the 3ft range on Wednesday. A minor rise in S windswell during Thursday afternoon tops out in the 2 to 3ft range on Friday morning before fading to lower levels by Saturday.
