Swell Diary: The Goldy & Northern NSW Are Pumping Right Now
COASTALWATCH | SWELL DIARY
If you tuned into the QUEENSLAND / NORTHERN NSW SURF CAMERAS this morning, you would be drooling. It's, well, pumping. Good news too, the swell and forecast remain on track with no downgrades, Cheif Surf Forecaster Ben Macartney has reported this morning. He has said the new pulse will happen a bit earlier than originally forecast with a kick in the afternoon of Thursday 9 March, particularly in the Northern parts of NSW.
What's happening in Queensland and Northern NSW today? The winds are south which is why the likes of Kirra, Burleigh and Snapper are looking good. These points are north facing so it's offshore there this morning. It's the same for Byron Bay and a few other points. The southerly/SSW winds are absolutely ideal.
Will the entire coastline have the same impact? It looks equal along the entire coastline but the direction is more SE up north and ESE down south. The SE bias means the southern Queensland breaks won't be as big as northern NSW and all breaks below because the swell will have to wrap in around the points. Where Ballina might be eight feet (because it faces SE), Snapper will be about 5-6 feet on the sets.
When will southern NSW clean up? The fetch at the moment is faced better for Northern NSW/QLD is better than the Sydney region until Friday, when it will gain easterly bias pulse. The only issue Sydney has to face now is the winds. Friday will see only certain places that will be amazing all day. It's not quite the light westerlies that typically make everywhere work and with the southerly wind blowing your best bet is to find the spots with protection from the south.
Champagne Saturday will be the day on the NSW coast. It will be on fire holding 4-6 feet and not as chunky as Friday. Saturday is predicted to see stereotypical autumn day, pumping conditions with the winds starting off light offshore and drop off to light-variable, before a light NE in the afternoon.
That's the way it's looking but some of the modelling is showing some south in the wind on Saturday but it depends on the position of the low.
Stay tuned for Thursday morning update. DON'T MISS the Quiksilver & Roxy Pro surf forecast for next week.
