Super Mega Swell of Awesome, Dane Heads To J-Bay, & Is Matt Meola The Best Aerialist In The World? – This Week In Surfing
Ten Things From Surfing and The Internet On The Week That Was June 26, 2015
1. Dat Swell...
Remember that bit in Independence Day starring Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum when the spaceship descends on New York, casting a giant moving shadow over Manhattan? Yeah, that's what this swell looks like. I mean, would you just look at that image from the Coastalwatch Plus Wavetracker below. It's terrifying for people like me, and the most exciting image ever for people like Camel, that legend who paddles mountains of swell whenever they hit isolated and frightening bits of Australian coast.
The swell is set to hit West Aus today and Indonesia over the weekend. It's also going to make epic conditions for South Aus, Victoria and will eventually reach all the way around the East Coast of Aus. *Whistles*
Check out Ben Macartney's forecaster blog to read something by someone who actually knows what they're talking about. He's kind of like the John John Florence of swell forecasting.
2. Dane Is Going To Surf In Jay Bay
Are there things that exist in the world that are better than Dane Reynolds surfing a big, long right point? Probably not. Look to Kai Neville's blockbuster surf movie Cluster and his footage in Morocco to confirm that. And so the news that Mr. Reynolds has been awarded the WSL wildcard for the upcoming Jeffreys Bay event had us walking aournd the SW and CW offices high fiving each other all week. The below video is old but it's worthy of a rewatch and serves a pretty sweet little reminder of why Dane scoring the wildcard to Jeffreys has us punching the air like the end of The Breakfast Club.
3. Matt Meola and Albee Layer Are Mad Internet Legends
Clips for days from this ratpack of incredibly talented Maui surfers. Matt Meola's performance here particularly, coupled with the "spindle" flip hje landed a few weeks ago, has us wondering if he should be considered the best aerialist in the world.
4. John John Florence Surfboarding In Australia
A bunch of clips of J-Fizzle from the Australian leg of the tour, sans heat rashvest. Keep an eye on this John John Florence guy everyone, he's going to be really good at surfing. You heard it here first. #breakingnews
5. Lexus Have Made A Hoverboard!
Marty McFly-away with your luxury hoverboard that you have definitely wanted since you were 11. After 18 months of development, Lexus have mysteriously unvelied the product of 80s childhood dreams with this Youtube clip. Hoverboards work using magnets, which operate by what I can only assume is magic (I failed year 9 science), and apparently the more weight you add, the stronger and colder the magnets have to be to work. So that weird mist coming off the board is liquid nitrogen, and the ground surface is made from some form of special metal to keep the board... hovering.
6. Occy Stars In Braun Shaver Ad
And it's actually funny. Reading the newspaper in the line-up, that's a classic good-time wholesome gag.
7. Look At This Tasmanian Beachbreak Wedge
"My uni break has been pretty fricken awesome," says Tasmanian photographer Digby Ayton. "Home has been absolutely pumping." Our favourite lanky Tasmanian sailor/surfer/photographer/filmmaker/Industrial designer is currently on holidays from first year Uni, spending time getting back in the Apple isle and scoring waves like this incredible wedge. It's not all dreamy relaxed glory though. It's cold. Really cold. And swimming for a little shoot, Diggers felt the brisk... "My hands were so cold when I came in that I couldn’t take off my fins!" he says.
8. Kyuss King Shreds Lowers
The kid has rail! This video is sick! Anyone else think young Kyuss surfs a bit like a mini Mick Fanning? No? Just me? Okay.
9. Cyrus Sutton Shows Us How To Convert A Van Into A Camper
Funny story, there's a guy who works here at Coastalwatch and Surfing World, and he probably doesn't want to be named, but he's been living in his van for eight months. Eight months! How good is that? Sometimes he wears slippers at work and, man, let me tell you, the ladies just can not get enough of him. Anyway, Cyrus Sutton, legend of sustainable surf culture, shows us how you too can be a slipper wearin' van guy or gal.
10. Hola Sunshine
This video came out over a week ago, but Mexican sand bottom right points surfed gracefully by Leila Hurst is just the perfect way to ease into the weekend. This is dreamier than Kelly Slater's eyeballs (which are super dreamy).
Bonus... Hockey Dad's New Single
Our bruzzies from Wollongong, surf band Hockey Dad, released a new video for their single Can't Have Them. They're legends.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. CW out.
