All-Time Snapper Was All-Time, Giant Mavericks Lip Lands On Dude's Face, & Water-Skiing Jaws – This Week In Surfing
Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was February 19, 2016
1. Snapper Was All-Time This Week, Fanning's Tube Was... Sigh...
So on Wednesday, Snapper to Greenmount put on a show. A real tube-show. Throwing us the imagery and visuals that stake its claim as the best right hand point in the world (some even called it the best the super-bank has ever been) and also keeping with the sterling tradition of doing all this just before the first event of the year hits go. The Quikky Pro starts March 10 btw, that’s in three weeks, which is two weeks later than last year. Will we get tubes like this? We can only hope.
2. Yass Kweens At Snapper
While the Snapper swell happened some of the world's best women surfers were out shredding, of course. Here's Steph, Sally, Dimity, Alana and someone I can't quite work out just yet (getting a sick barrel at the end), ripping!
3. Seven Tubes, One Wave
Are you sick of the Snapper content yet? NEVER! Here's local hot-dogger and cousin of Sir Michael Parkinson, Mitch Parkinson getting seven tubes on one wave. Seven. That's one for every morning I didn't shower this week.

4. Even More Snapper
How about now? You sick of Snapper content now? Well, tuff, because we need to watch how Mick Fanning and Jack Freestone are shaping up for the first event of the year. That last wave of Freestone's is a joke. Asher Pacey looks smooth out there too.
5. Scramble – It Looks Like Bobby Martinez Is On Team Octopus
Dion Agius, Chippa Wilson and Nate Tyler have a deck grip brand named Octopus and they're calling it the best brand in the world, which is foolproof marketing straight out of the book of Kanye West (call yourself the best long enough and people will believe it P.S. Kaye West is the GOAT, believe). This clip also happens to introduce some new team one of which is Bobby Martinez. Bobby Martinez! And any clip with Bobby Martinez’s backhand attack is worthy of your time. Plus there’s wedges!
6. Sufjan Stevens and Surfing
Pair stellar surfing (and skiing) imagery with a track from Sufjan Steven's latest album and you've got the makings of a truly beautiful film reel. This one is Sydney based photog Steve Wall's. Highlight? The follow footage from some south coast slabs.
7. Your Wipe-out of the Week Is This One
From a Mavericks session on Feb 4, watch Californian Matt Becker pretty much land the ultimate acid-drop, then bodysurf on his back before having a lip land on his face. Sickest time. Big wave surfing looks like so much fun, hey?
8. Island Vibes
A Hawaii highlights clip in late February? Why not? Deadlines are a social construct that don't need to exist anyway. This heavy highlight edit features Bruce Irons, Julian Wilson, Taj Burrow Mitch Crews and more on fire and was filmed and edited by pro charger Diego Santos.
9. Water-Skiing Jaws
It wouldn't be 2016 without a Jaws clip. Even when there wasn't another bar-pushing, game-changing session at Peahi we'll get some footage of some legend/dooley out there and water-skiing. Why? Because it's there. And if something is there, it must be water-skied, but you already knew that. How good is the 90s style voice-over and slow-mo? How good is it when he takes a push with his ski sticks? Ahhh, Internet, you're the best.
10. Just When You Thought Surfing Couldn't Get Any More Radical...
"It was pretty crowded at North Av this morning."
"Yeah mate, every man and his dog was out there."
And another thing...
Event number five of the Subway Surf Series went down at Margaret River on Feb 6-7 and here are the highlights of the ripping grom event. The Men’s side of the event was taken out by Quinn Bruce while WA’s Mia McCarthy was the winner of the Women's, which is all well and good, but the real winner of the day was surfing, and the even bigger winner than that was of course Kehu Butler’s Kiwi accent. The best.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Go Kangas.
