Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was May 5, 2017

1. Billabong Board Tales With Shane Dorian

Hey everybody, for this week's this week in surfing I am writing from Hong Kong and I drank too much last night, and this morning t I sent a photo of my face to Surfing World Editor Vaughan Blakey and he said I look like Molly Meldrum, so I'm going to put the line "Do yourself a favour" into every video caption because he dared me to, and today is not the day I back down from a dare. So, do yourself a favour, and keep reading this excellent rendition of This Week In Surfing. First up we have a new episode of Billabong's excellent Youtube series, Board Tales, featuring Shane Dorian. Of course you know Shane Dorian as lead actor in the hit film of 1998, In God’s Hands, but did you know that apart from acting, Shane Dorian is also a very talented professional and big wave surfer? Yep, it’s true. He also likes hunting.

2. Ramzi Boukhiam, Doing A Surf

If you’re a regular viewer of Jake Paterson’s YouTube series, Snake Tales (do yourself a favour and check it out), then you’ll already be aware of how good this big Moroccan fella is. Which is really good. Here he is a little closer to home at one of his favourite spots, over two mornings for a neat little swell. Ya think Ramzi will be off the QS and on the CT in 2018? Keep an eye on those mid year QS10000s for that.

3. Clay Marzo, Also Doing A Surf

Clay Marzo, as you know, is one of the world's most underrated surfers. Hold on, if the world knows someone is underrated, is he then no longer underrated? What a paradox. Anyway, the flick thing he does at the 1 minute mark is bonkers. Do yourself a favour and watch it three times. The other interesting thing about this clip is that it was filmed and edited by a guy named Peter Labrador, and, look, I know there is no way this is possible, but I'm just not going to let go of the idea that this was made by a really good dog who somehow learnt how to use a camera and film editing software. Picture that, a happy labrador, wearing human clothes, sitting at a computer and uploading the file to Vimeo. You're a good boy Peter Labrador!

4. Occy Does A Shoey

Oh no, it's everyone's favourite podcast hosted by Occy and, oh dear, the Mad Hueys are the featured guest, and during the interview, no, Occy goes, sigh, Occy does, yeah, Occy does a shoey. Do yourself a favour and buy yourself a delicous lager beer and drink it out of a shoe tonight. It's especially good if there are no clean glasses to use. You don't even need to use beer, you can drink a cordial out of a shoe too. It doesn't even need to be a drink, why not eat a lovely fettucine carbonara out of your shoe tonight? Go on.

5. WSL's Connor O'Leary Profile

Isn’t it weird that none of us knew who Connor O’Leary was two years ago? Well not none of us. I’m sure his family, and everyone who he was schooling on the QS knew he was. People he went to school with too, they probably knew who he was, but the rest of us ignorant surf fans, isn’t it weird that we didn’t know about Connor O’Leary and now he’s the champion of the QS, the darkhorse of the CT, and is sitting comfortably just outside of the top ten after the Australian leg (equal with Kelly Slater and on top of guys like Julian Wilson, MIck Fanning)?Do yourself a favour and tune into one of his post heat interviews at Rio next week and make him your new favourite surfer. Anyway, this week the WSL released a sweet profile clip on the goofy-footed Japanese Cronullafornian, which WSL website visitor Anna Henderson summed up best, commenting underneath the piece: “Want to find a girl for one night? Go to ==>> goog.gl/zklRMn.” Couldn’t have said it better ourselves, Anna.

6. Snapt 3 Trailer – Lots of Good Waves, Especially That Bobby Martinez One

Snapt 3 is an independent surf movie starring a who’s who of cult surf stars including Bruce Irons, Mason Ho, Jack Robinson, Bobby Martinez (the wave he gets at the 2 minute mark is the sickness), Asher Pacey, Josh Kerr, Zeke Lau, Parker Coffin and heaps of other people good at surfboarding. Did you see Snapt 1 or 2? Or is this the first time you’ve ever heard of it? Do you think we’ll understand the narrative of this movie if we didn’t see the first two? Probably not, huh. Do yourself a favour and have a look at that cover image of Mason Ho, though. Phwoarrrrrrr.

7. Rio Starts In less Than A Week, And Here Is A WSL Promo

Did you know the Oi Rio Pro starts in less than a week? Did you know that it’s not at Rio proper this year, nope, it’s down the road at a place called Saquarema, which is apparently a much better wave than the beach breaks of Rio, but which also makes it super hard to pick your Fantasy Surf teams. Do yourself a favour and put John John in your team though, he's unbeatable at the moment (apart from Ciao Ibelli). On another note, What do you think of the ad the WSL have put out for Rio? Dion Agius isn’t stoked on it. The culture jamming freesurfer posted to his Instagram: “Is this really for real. What on earth is @wsl trying to turn surfing into? Who is approving this? 195 lbs of BOOM? WIZARDRY? WARRIORS?”

8. In God's Hands Is The Best Movie Ever

This week on The Dooley, Danny and I rewatched the 1998 classic Hollywood surf film, In God's Hands and it was the best shit ever. Do yourself a favour and rewatch it too because it stars Shane Dorian and Shaun Tomson and surf writer Mat George and a guy name Rush Randle who does crazy 90s X-Games style flips on 4 foot waves. And Shaun Tomson looks like Jeff Goldblum in it, with his shirt all open and flowing in the wind. It's so good.

9. Pete Devries Not In Canada

Pete Devries, the only Canadian surfer, and the only surfer who is Canadian… not really, but it seems that way, he recently got away from the cold ocean off Victoria Island, Vancouver and tested his high school Canadian French tabernak calisse in southern France. Do yourself a favour and visit France too, it's wonderful this time of year.

10. Ain't That Swell, Bells Wrap Episode

Yes, shredheads, waxheads, kooks, and barneys, Ain't That Swell have gone and structured an episode and it's their best ever. Do Yourself A Favour and get listening to the best surf podcast out there, because no one does a talk about surfing as good as Jed and Vaughan.

Bonus...

Everyone, our worst fears have been realised, there is no Weak Wrap episode this week. What's the point in getting up in the morning if there is no Weak Wrap to make us laugh at the funniest stuff from the past week in surfing? Well, do yourself a favour and treat yourself to this throwback clip of Ozzie Wright in the mid-2000s classic Wave Magazine classic, Doped Youth. The best video section of all time.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
