Great news today with Australia’s offshore oil and gas authority, NOPSEMA rejecting BP's $1 Billion, Great Australian Bight drilling application rejected!

“BP was responsible for the world’s biggest oil spill accident, the Deepwater Horizon tragedy in 2010, when 800 million litres of oil spewed into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days." Said Wilderness Society South Australia Director Peter Owen

Coastalwatch Marine Biologist Brinkley Davies covered the story, Fight For The Great Australian Bight, just a month ago and says of the decision.

"The company’s plans for the Bight drew widespread criticism from the Wilderness Society, many locals and environmental professionals. The plan released last month showed scientific modelling outlining that an oil spill in the Bight would devastate South Australia’s $422 million fishing industry and would be detrimental to coastal tourism across Australia’s southern coast."

Brinkley says her biggest hope is to see BP steer clear of the Great Australian Bight completely, "It is a unique place and is the life source of South Australian oceans. Our country needs it more than it needs oil."
