Baby boom expected for Ningaloo’s endangered turtles

28 Nov 2011 0 Share

Turtle nesting season is underway in Western Australia’s North West as Green, loggerhead and Hawksbill turtles lay their eggs on protected beaches between Gnaraloo Bay and Exmouth on the World Heritage Listed Ningaloo coast.

“There were plenty of turtle sightings along the coast before the nesting season commenced and the season is shaping up to be a successful one,” said Jamie Campbell, from the Department of Environment and Conservation Education.

With only a few large nesting populations of marine turtles left in the world, the Ningaloo coast is an important breeding ground.

If you’re in the area, drop past the Jurabi Turtle Centre to find out about the biology, ecology, threats and conservation measures surrounding marine turtles, and get along on an evening guided tour through a turtle rookery.

Contact the Exmouth Visitor Centre on (08) 9949 1176 or visit www.exmouthwa.com.au or www.australiascoralcoast.com for more information.
