Surfers, Have Your Say

The iconic 52-kilometre stretch of astonishing and picturesque coastal landscapes, which stretches along South-East Queensland’s Gold Coast region, is not only a haven for surfers and a highly sought-after district to live in, but acts as a vital economic strategy to assist in the sustainability of the area.

Recently, the Gold Coast City Council, backed by the addition of large community support, has introduced 18 key action plans to assist in the maintenance, protection and management of the aforementioned coastline over the next 10 years.

The release of five short information videos to gain promotion for the topic have been spread online and using local identities and factual consequences, both previous and predicted for the future, the campaign has successfully began spreading awareness about how they plan to combat erosion, overuse and storm surge, amongst other evident problems along the beaches.

CoastalCOMS, a partnering company with Coastalwatch, has been a major aid to this development with their coastal management and surveillance system. Gold Coast City Council has adapted their assistance to monitor distinguishable changes in the outline of the beaches, along with utilizing regular reports on sand quality and offshore bars.

Mayor of the Gold Coast, Tom Tate, appealed to the local community to give their say on the issue, and what they believe is in the best interest of the district. “The Ocean Beaches Strategy is a complex issue. This starts the conversation for the community to get involved, the government, and businesses, of how we can best protect our beach long term,” said Mayor Tate at a promotion information session held by members of the local society.

The situation regarding population increase and a projected increase in annual tourism are key reasons which Mayor Tate cites were critical in his decision to introduce this plan, with the assurance that the beaches will remain clean and healthy for all to enjoy the forefront outcome.

With an initiative in place, a 10 year plan and support from on a strong local community basis, the iconic beaches that have formed part of out national identity are set to be sustained and refurbished for years to come. – Dan Caban
