Dave Rastovich, Courtney Conlogue, The Century Swell & SurfAid
In June 2015 SurfAid ambassadors Dave Rastovich and Courtney Conlogue joined SurfAid founder Dr Dave Jenkins on a visit to Nias, which is among SurfAid's major centres of change in Indonesia, Sumba, Sumbawa and the Mentawai Islands.
The team witnessed the incredible work being undertaken among the Archipelago in reducing mother and infant mortality by setting up and providing health services, water sanitation, malaria education, treatment and nutritional education for villagers in remote surf locations.
“We’re just so lucky to come out and visit these beautiful places and their wonderful people,” Said Rasta to Chris Binns who joined the team on the trip. “The SurfAid crew are amazing, doing incredible stuff for the benefit of others and they’re doing it really joyfully; kind of fun, and so sincere. To see the programs at work is great. Throw in good waves and it’s pretty much happy days.”
And waves they got. It just so happened that the ocean came alive as the crew's work in the area wrapped up and while in Nias, the swell whipped up to 10-foot perfection and named the Century Swell. They were joined by surf legends and free surfers including Hawaiian big wave surfer Alex Gray.
