    Summary
Monday’s tiny to virtually flat conditions belie the onset of a very large and energetic upswing in southerly swell this week – and this is set to come to a head at very large/ heavy levels across the entire Eastern Seaboard on Thursday and Friday. As discussed last week, this surrounds the evolution of another deep, complex winter low over the Southern Ocean and southern Tasman Sea over the next few days. Monday saw the first in a series of vigorous cold fronts linked to this system sweeping across Tasmania and Bass Strait. Initially this sets up a strengthening WSW fetch out of eastern Bass Strait to whip up a relatively modest increase in directional South swell on Tuesday and Wednesday; mostly ranging from 3 to 5ft across northern NSW south facing beaches – but considerably smaller and slower along open coasts owing to the deepwater south-westerly bias in direction.

As the developing low moves clear of Tasmania early on Wednesday we’ll see a stronger and broader 35 to 45kt SW fetch-area expanding throughout the southern Tasman Sea. That will trigger a much larger and more energetic increase in southerly groundswell on Thursday. As the low stalls over the southern Tasman Sea on Thursday morning we’ll see another vigorous front feeding into its southwestern sector – and this is the catalyst for a phenomenal rise in southerly groundswell on Friday as a broad belt of SSW gales further accelerate the growth an already heavy sea-state.
