Report: Fun Wedgie Beaches & Great Marine Creatures

Report by Dan Wyer

The past week in the west saw a return to some fine sunny weather, some decent swell and another shark scare. The surf wasn't too bad through the period with Sunday through to Wednesday delivering a decent run of clean quality surf in the six-to-eight foot range easing through the period. Early morning offshores and late afternoon glass offs were the peak times to hit the water in the southwest. While in Perth and Rotto those brave enough to hit the water enjoyed a good run of fun sized waves also. The weekend saw a rise in SSW swell with cold SE winds. Due to the south angle of the swell the brunt of it missed our shores. Still, if you were keen there were some fun wedges on offer in the three-to-four foot range.

In other news, last Tuesday saw a tagged five metre Great White Shark trigger acoustic receivers from Ocean Reef to Floreat. Beaches were closed as the shark moved south along the coast. The shark was tagged over 12 months ago on W.A south coast near Albany as part of the State Government-funded program through ongoing work with the CSIRO and the WA Fisheries Department. This is the first tagged Great White of the program to be detected along metropolitan beaches.
