Mark Cameron and Rod Baldwin Lead the Charge for TravelSIM Team Australia at Nicaragua ISA World Masters Surfing Championship
18/7/2012: WHILE the best master's surfers from around the globe battled it out at the ISA World Masters Surfing Championship in Nicaragua today, Mark Cameron (Woolgoolga, NSW) and Rod Baldwin (Copocabana, NSW) led the charge for TravelSIM Team Australia on day three of competition.
The ocean continued to produce high-quality waves with offshore winds throughout the day. Although the swell size decreased slightly, Surfline, the Official Forecaster for the event, is anticipating a substantial swell to hit Nicaragua in the coming days, providing overhead waves for the finals.
Just one surfer was eliminated yesterday on Day 2, but 17 more would be joining him today as spectators for the duration of the event at Colorado Beach at Hacienda Iguana.
In the Men’s Grand Masters Qualifying Round 2, Woolgoolga’s Mark Cameron produced a polished display of fine surfing, beating Randall Chaves (CRI), 9.17; Eduardo Rojos (VEN), 7.77 and Julián Galeana (MEX), 2.56.
Fellow Australian Rob Baldwin was just as impressive in the Men’s Grand Kahunas Qualifying Round 2, notching a 14.30 total to defeat Oalto Castro (BRA), 10.43; Robert Reid (DOM), 7.93 and Aurelio Prieto (ECU), 5.30
The Men’s Kahunas Qualifying Round 2 was also staged on the third day of competiton.
Scamander’s Scott Weinreich was relegated to the repercharge round, while Emerald Beach surfer John Schmidenberg progressed into the next round with a runner up placing.
Though the majority of the competitors in the event still compete on a regular basis, the ISA World Masters is a chance to compete on a bigger stage with vastly stronger competition. It’s also an opportunity to rekindle old rivalries and old friendships.
Action resumes tomorrow, July 18, with several Repechage rounds. In total, 58 more competitors will be eliminated.
The event webcast will be live beginning at 7:40am local time (6:40am PST; 9:40am EST; 2:40pm in Paris; and 11:40pm in Sydney) with The Morning Show at www.isawmsc.com/live.
