Groms Put To The Test At Cronulla To Open Rip Curl GromSearch Presented By Telstra With FIVE:AM

Small, but playful waves greeted the contestants this morning at the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Telstra with FIVE:AM in Cronulla.

The four-day event kicked off early at Sandshoes with the under-16 boys taking to the water straight up. The punchy, little north-east swell and the shallow reef, created a near perfect righthander for the competitors who are all fighting for a spot in the GromSearch National Final in December.

West Australian surfer Jacob Wilcox was a convincing winner in his Round one heat.  The goofy footer carried a ton of speed and accuracy throughout an array of backside snaps. When asked what he thought of his Cronulla stay, Jacob said: “Cronulla is really nice. The waves are small, but really fun and rippable. The warm water has been awesome as well. I’m stoked to be here.”

Kai Hing was an early standout, hitting the little rights with power, precision and flow. The Sunshine Coast natural-footer successfully linked together a large variety of frontside snaps and carves to score an early 7.50 and 6.00. He won the heat with Sorrel Hayes and Ben Dewhurst finishing in second and third respectively.

Jackson Coffey notched up the highest heat score in the under-16 boys squeezing upwards of six solid turns on a single wave. Judges were obviously impressed with the Gold Coast surfer’s power, speed and style and rewarded him with a 7.27 and a 7.83. Harry Bryant surfed a great heat but couldn’t catch Jackson and had to settle for second place. Max Tobin finished in third with Roan O’Sullivan in fourth.

Fresh off a win in BL’s Blast Off, Newport’s Holly Wawn smashed apart the small right-handers with a solid repertoire of accurate snaps and powerful carves. The Northern Beaches surfer scored a total of 17.34 for the heat.

Harley Ross Webster was a standout in the under-14s locking in a heat total of 14.67 after unleashing multiple backside turns with style and flow.

The Telstra “Wave of the Day” went to Yamba local Jeames Young for his close to perfect and critical snaps in the pocket nailing a 9.57 single wave score.

Aside from the surfing the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Telstra with FIVE:AM was home to a bunch of extra activities for the groms to soak up.

The FIVE:AM Combi was onsite handing out a masses of flavored organic yogurts to all competitors, family, friends and spectators.

The Penny Skateboards “Skate Off” involved categories of best manoeuvre and fastest skate run categories. All groms who participated walked away with a bunch of Rip Curl and Penny prizes.

Supporting the event, Polaroid cameras gave each competitor the opportunity to be in front of the lens and snap their mates in the surf or testing the Penny Skateboards.

A number of DHD Surfboards were on offer for each competitor to check out and gain feedback from DHD representatives about their own boards.

All divisions are on hold for Day 2. Please call the event hotline on 0458 247 212 at 6:45am tomorrow morning.
