Sydney and Surrounds School Holidays Swell Recap.

It seems like everything is a little upside down of late in and around Sydney town.

Soccer has been on the front page of the paper, but not due to a supposed riot. Everyone is apparently down on the government, yet our currency is high, and unemployment and interest rates are at record lows.

Autumn is generally cooler, a time when we enjoy early morning offshores and our first taste of southerly grunt, yet last week was hot, flat and northerly.

School holidays are often flat, yet right on cue, the first East Coast Low of the season tracked south delivering the first swell in weeks, and the good news is this weekend is looking bigger and better again.

A fun sized 2-4ft pulse of ENE swell started showing at select swell magnets on Sunday morning. Warm sunny skies and hot offshore NW winds groomed the somewhat inconsistent first pulse, ahead of similar conditions on Monday. Kelly, TC, BL and hordes of local groms enjoyed a fun session at LA. South of Sydney, swell magnets like Woonona delivered clean and consistent 4ft peaks, while most beachies in between were a slightly inconsistent 2-4ft.

The swell wasn’t quite living up to expectations, heaps of crew were slightly disgruntled after scoping pics, clips and cam footage of Burleigh, Kirra, Byron and Lennox on Sunday/Monday. Adam Melling said, “There were six to eight second barrels on offer at Lennox on Sunday.”

With tales and online coverage of the swell up north all over the net on Monday, hope was fading in Sydney late on Monday as the swell appeared to be dropping if anything.

However after some overnight storms and a south wind change, a secondary more powerful pulse of mid period E groundswell kicked in about mid morning Tuesday across Sydney and surrounds, maintaining solid three to five foot waves in south corners all afternoon.

Fairy Bower, the Manly/Nth Steyne stretch, South Narra and Cronulla Point were the pick of the bunch in Sydney.

Wednesday morning dawned a similar size, but perhaps a tad more consistent and slightly cleaner under light south westerly winds. Ox, Griggsy and Jezza enjoyed a quiet little session at Solander. Kai Otton was the standout at Southey and once again the Manly stretch was the biggest, cleanest but also most crowded.

Thursday morning was cleaner again, though really only 3ft max.

In summation it was a long way off all time, but it sure served as a reminder of what we all know autumn is capable of producing. It was a nice appetiser; Manu from MKR woulda scored it a 6 or 7. Here’s hoping for a more substantial swell event from the south this weekend.
