When we saw this video from Dave Rastovich's La Casa residency, we marvelled at just how briliant a waterman Rasta is, and how superb his bodysurfing skills are. So we asked him to share some tips on the fine art of the body whomp. So watch below, have a read of Rasta's words below and get out there... nude.
Rasta's Five Essential Tips For Good Bodysurfing
1. Budgie smugglers. If the water isn't too cold these are the preferred functional fashion. The elderly will be particularly impressed to see you keeping a great Australian tradition alive. If you are on a deserted beach then go naked, and if it is cold a steamer is a good buoyancy help.
2. Reduce your body's muscle mass. My friends call me Flat Stanley cause I am skinny and have no chest. I cope with the humiliation by knowing that as soon as I swim and bodysurf my “planing hull” shaped torso allows me speed that the more bulked up surfers don't have access to. Most of the great body surfers tend to disappear when they turn sideways.
3. Do not wear a legrope if you are surfing on your own and away from rocks, the more you swim the better you get at it.
4. Go bare foot. There’s less drag once you’re on the wave, and no cramps or blisters from the flippers.
5. Be sincere not serious! Line-ups seem pretty competitive and slipping through the cracks as a body surfer is a great way to avoid the fashion parade and chest beating while having your simple fun.
