Swell Recap – Death Slabs In December

Everything seems so outta whack!

December is traditionally a time for 1-2ft NE wind dribble on the east coast right?

We get our lounge - core fix watching Backdoor Pipe pitting on fuel TV or our computer screens, but the local beach is usually 1-2ft and windblown right?

Um, in 2013 that would be wrong.

On the weekend of Dec 7 and 8 certain south facing reefs were 6-10ft, and delivering death slabs in December.

Solander was 6ft plus and slabbing on Saturday morning, whilst on the southern side of the peninsula at a certain south facing reef break there were some genuine 10ft sets on Sunday.

Everything seems so outta whack during the back end of 2013.

The first 6 or so months of the year were pretty much par for the course wave wise in and around Sydney. There were good weeks and bad weeks, and a handful of standout days as you would expect in autumn and early winter.

However, by the second half of July things deteriorated noticeably, so much so, that the back half of winter was without doubt the worst in recent memory in terms of swell activity, or should I say lack thereof.

The warmest July on record, was followed by the warmest August on record, which in turn resulted in the hottest winter on record. September and October proved to be the hottest ever start to spring too.

Dominant high - pressure systems generally pushed the majority of cold fronts well to the south, producing heatwaves, bushfires and a swell drought.

Thankfully that all changed in late October.

Sunday October 27 delivered an epic 6-10ft, 17 second south swell. Luke Egan, Glen Pringle and a cast of stars charged a southern Sydney reef, the same reef that delivered 6-10ft December death slabs on Saturday Dec 7 and Sunday December 8.

November was wet, and super consistent on the swell front, and so far December has been off the hook.

A neat mid – sized East pulse and offshore winds last week, followed by a turbo charged double overhead south on the weekend.

Hey no one is complaining. I’m just pointing out the weird anomalies.

Solander has broken more times in recent weeks/months than the back end of winter, and that peeps is just plain weird!

I mean having a government that doesn’t believe in climate change is weird, and surfers that aren’t in touch with the various anomalies are weirder still.

Just saying.
