Jake Nelson, a long-haired Cenny Coast fella with a few years of surf photography experience behind him, caught our eye with a charming e-mail not long ago – however it was his shots attached that really got our attention. His enthusiasm is contagious, so read on through to his Central Coast vibes.

CW: Jake, how did you initially start getting into photography?

JN: I have grown up around surfing my whole life but I guess flicking through images as a grom from local photographers on the Central Coast inspired me to invest in my first DSLR.

How old were you at that stage?

I initially started taking my first photographs around the age of 14.

And it’s just progressed from there?

Yeah I believe so, after I left school I knew I wanted to gain more knowledge about my camera so I went on to study for my Diploma in Photo Imaging, which I only recently graduated from. I’ve also been a lot more successful lately as I’ve developed my own website and have been selling quite a few of my images to locals around my community.

Do you remember your first camera?

I sure do, it was a Canon 50d that I used to take out in my SPL housing as a grom.

What equipment are you currently shooting with?

At the moment I’m shooting with a Canon 7D and using a variety of different lenses.

Do you use film equipment at all?

Not necessarily, I have played around with film before although I find I get more of a buzz trying to capture that moment and creating that still image.

What’s the landscape like around your area that you are available to shoot?

Yeah it’s quite good actually, there are some great locations around the Central Coast you just have to be willing enough to explore and find them.

What other aspects of photography are you into? Portraits, lifestyles etc.

When there are no waves and I’m not shooting down the surf I’m either working on my landscape photography or just mucking around with my mates trying to get some cool images.

Which photographers influence you?

There are so many great photographers that inspire me with their work lately so it’s really hard for me to narrow it down to a few names. But guys like Ray Collins, Chris Burkard and Trent Mitchell are always pushing the limits of surf photography.

What are your plans for the immediate future?

Yeah I wouldn’t mind studying and continue to learn more about photography, although over the next few years I would love to get the chance to travel and document surfing!
