Breaking: Injury At Cloudbreak

Coastalwatch has just received information that Kelly Slater has injured his foot while surfing six to eight foot waves at Cloudbreak reef in Fiji. Sources revealed the 11 times World Champion suffered the injury after hitting a shockwave in the barrel while shooting footage with the new Virtual Reality 360 degree camera. The injury has stressed a bone in the top of Kelly’s foot above the middle toe. The extent of the damage is so far unknown however it was noted that Kelly’s initial reaction was “non stressed” and that “he’ll be ok for Hawaii".

If X-rays reveal the injury to be worse than first thought, and Kelly is unable to compete in the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii (starting December 8th) he will forfeit his chance at a record breaking 12th World Title leaving current ratings leader Gabriel Medina (Brz) and defending World Champion Mick Fanning (Aus) to battle for the 2014 Title.

Stay tuned to Kelly’s instagram for information as it comes to hand and for some wild insights into the nutritional benefits of activated almond milk.

UPDATE

Kelly Slater has posted the results from his X-rays to Instagram stating he has broken two toes but should be fit in time for the Pipe Masters. Kelly wrote alongside a triptych of his tootsies:

"#FootPrognosis...I broke my second and third toes and also sprained three or four toes on left foot surfing Cloudbreak a couple days ago. Three weeks or so of healing in a walking boot and a couple more weeks of some rehab but should be ready to go by the #PipeMasters waiting period. The foamball from the lip landing inside the barrel bounced back up and flipped the board into my foot, hyper-extending the toes backwards. My second toe was sitting kind of across my third one so I knew something was a little off. The worst thing about it was how good the surf was and having to watch from the sidelines afterwards. At least the boys scored a few before the wind went bad and swell backed off. The day before that I went over the falls and broke my fin off with my knee so I'm actually probably lucky to not have gotten hurt worse. Good time to reflect and cleanse the body after two weeks of bacon and barrels on @tavaruaislandresort! Thanks for all the messages from friends and strangers the last couple of days. #ExcusesExcuses "

He also added to the discussion in the comments below:

"@lachnroll_7 that's very likely a joke but it's actually amazing or many people call an actual injury an excuse. Last two times I broke my foot I won those contests. Might be a good omen." And, "I'll@surf pipe if it's falling off!"

– The 2014 World Title Race Made Easy –

If Medina makes the final or wins at the Billabong Pipe Masters, he will win the 2014 ASP World Title.
If Medina loses in the semis, Fanning will need to win the event and Slater will be out.
If Medina loses in the quarters, Fanning will need to win the event and Slater will be out.
If Medina loses in round 5, Fanning will need to make the final, and Slater will be out.
If Medina loses in either rounds 3 or 2, Fanning will need to make the semis to win or the quarters to send the race into a one-heat “surf-off” between himself and Medina. Slater will need to win the event.
