Bryce Young's Turns, Eddie Rothman's Fury, John John's Everything – This Week In Surfing
Ten Nine Things From Surfing and The Internet On The Week That Was January 9, 2015
Presented by the Subway Summer Surf Series
By Mike Jennings
1. John John Forever
John John released a clip. It's from France. John John clips are the best clips, and that's why it's the number one thing that happened this week. Isn't it interesting that a lot of the best and most entertaining waves here are when Johnny has a heat rashie on. Says something about the state of pro surfing doesn't it? Or does it? I just don't know anymore, guys.
2. Jamie O'Brien and Friends Do The Awesome
Ahh, good wholesome fun with your best mates. What a life. How well do they navigate this giant multi-person SUP thing at the 1 minute mark? Super impressive.
3. Eddie Rothman Is Still Angry
“Well, I don’t know Mr. Speaker, I think that you guys bought the big wave tour just to bury it. Now you’re over here in Hawaii trying to impose your wills, huh? ‘We’ll do this, we have money, we’ll do that…’” Do you feel the fury of Mr. Rothman? Eddie released this clip direct to Youtube today, and it will probably be the most watched surf-related clip, that doesn't contain surfing, for all of 2015.
4. Jamie O'Brien (Again!) Board Transfer At Backdoor Pipeline
JOB transfers from foamie to foamie at the most famous wave in the world. It's a cakewalk when you know how.
5. Dane Peterson by Nick Jones
We featured Nick Jones in Young, Free, Alright! ages ago and the reason for that is he's a great young filmmaker, as you can clearly see here. This time his lens is trained on Noosa-fornian Dane Peterson, a man who surfs and takes photos equally well. Graceful, and beautiful with both artforms.
6. Kalani David, Unreal Surf/Skate Combo
From RVCA comes the latest of their Hawaiian edits, this one focussing on local young fellow, Kalani David. Apart from being arguablly the best surfer/skater in the world (John John Florence would also be in that conversation) he also has the fortune of having two first names, like James Dean. Brilliant.
7. Bryce Young Does Sick Turns, Vissla Goes To Nicaragua
The waves, the boards, the music, the surfing. This is a great clip, and if we saw the surfing of Bryce Young on a more regular basis he would possibly be your new favourite surfer.
8. Rasta's Magic Carpets
From soulful Australian filmmaker Nathan Oldfield comes this clip exploring Rasta's relationship with his boards shaped by Gary McNeil. How about that little lay-back at 1.21. Fresh.
9. Owen Milne Showreel
Milney is a young legend filmmaker guy from the Central Coast of NSW. He's hilarious. You should meet him if you get the chance. He'll make you laugh. We met him. We loved him. Since we met him he's gotten better and better at filmmaking and can now show off some of his best work in this rad little showreel of his travels in 2014. Onya Milney.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. CW out.
