Story by Blaise Miller-Hill & Sam Baker

Our four-legged family members are left out when it comes to enjoying Australia's amazing coastline. There are very few surf beaches that permit man's best friend, but we've got the list right here.

* If you do take your pooch to the beach, remember that the only thing you should leave behind are footprints.

SUNSHINE BEACH, QUEENSLAND

Sunshine beach is a 10-minute drive from Noosa. There is a long section of beach that is dog-friendly. The bonus is that there is a fun A-frame beach break, which in the right conditions can provide left and right beachie barrels.

COOLUM BEACH, QUEENSLAND

Coolum has a dog zone that begins at the northern end of Coolum Beach Holiday Park running down to Stumers Creek with beach access at 67-72. Waves breaking both right and left beachie break best working with SE swell.

KINGSCLIFF MAIN BEACH, NSW

Kingscliff is a fun, dog-friendly beach on the NSW / QLD boarder, with a few fun waves breaking over a sandbar. Option of both rights and lefts waves can be hollow right up. Usually a lower-key alternative to it's Gold Coast neighbour breaks.

CABARITA BEACH, NSW

Cabarita is a town between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay, it has a right-hand point break. Cabarita is also the home to the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre which means you and your pup might bump into one of Australia's best young surfers or even a world champ in training.

AVOCA BEACH, NSW

Avoca Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the NSW Central Coast over summer with it's consistent, long stretch of beach break and temporary dog zone for 150-300m in the middle of the beach.

GREENHILLS BEACH, NSW

Nowhere near as crowded or popular as nearby Cronulla Beach, Greenhills sports a fun beach break with loads of options. Dogs are allowed on the beach outside the hours of 10am and 4pm daily. Greehills is an extension of Wanda beach so the nearest parking is at Bate Bay Rd.

TORQUAY, VICTORIA

The Surf Coast is the pulse of the surf industry in Victoria and lucky for the people of Torquay they've got an amazing stretch of off-leash and variable off-leash stretches of sand. White Beach is always leash-free, while popular surf spot Jan Juc has a variable timeframe with Dec 1 - Feb 28 where dogs can be off-leash between 7pm and 9am. Between March and November dogs are allowed off-leash any time.

SEAFORD, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Seaford is on the mid-coast about a 45-minute drive south of Adelaide. It does get crowded but is a fun wave that picks up decent Indian Ocean storm swells. Dogs are permitted on the beach between Tiller Drive, Seaford, to the northern alignment of Robertson Road, Moana, at any time. A great stretch of sand for your furry mate.

BENNION BEACH, PERTH, WA

Bennion Beach is the best place in the middle of Perth to take your dog for a good run and then shred on a nice right-handed beachie. Located on the north side of famous Trigg Point.

WATERMANS BEACH, WA

An exposed reef break with fairly consistent surf. Best conditions pop up with a ground swell from the west. There is a choice between left and right reef breaks and lots of sand to mess about in with your dogs.
