SURFING WORLD MAGAZINE'S REELERS 2015 WINNER

Category: Youth
Title: Eye Sea
By: Darcy Ward

Description: Inspired by a chance encounter, a serendipitous reminder from the universe about the importance of the present moment. An exploration of life; an elderly soul reflects on his past and present relationship with the ocean. A lifelong journey bound by more than the physical world. There's nothing more important than having a vision and taking time to consciously reflect and appreciate the little things.

At 20-years-old, Darcy won the Youth Category of the 2015 Reelers Short Surf Film Competition. He had a quick chat to us after his win about the motivation for shooting, directing, producing and editing a film so far beyond his age. Based on an old blind man's reflection on his time and life as a surfer before losing his sight, the narration draws you instantly into the deeply sensitive and emotional life journey, as portrayed by big wave surfer Brett Burcher.

"I had three different ideas at the start and I was so stoked that Surfing World Magazine came up with the idea of Reelers." Said Darcy.

"I really wanted to work with Brett Burcher, but I didn't want to do high-performance surfing film. On the first trip Burch broke his neck and I only had a few clips from that trip that I could use. Later that month I was shooting at the Aussie titles and was watching the Over 55's, just imagining how these guys surfed back in the day and it kind of sparked the idea for me to find an old man and tell his story." Darcy said.

"One of our family friends' Dad is blind and lost his sight at 55. I got the story together and talked it out with Burch, who is an epic writer. He put what I wanted to do into words in the week before the closing date. I didn't have a voice-over or anything and I met this guy just randomly and just told him that he had a great voice for voice-overs. He agreed to help us out so we recorded the script and he nailed it. Burch and I just looked at each other in the recording and knew it was all falling into place."

"The whole thing to me was just like, it was a story that had to be told. It was such a humbling experience for me to make it and after the experience I was in a total mindset of 'it's just a film and I don't mind if I don't win because this experience was the best thing that could have happened to me.' Everything fell into place and is really appreciated by everyone who was touched and involved in the production."
